Mid-week news report: Mark Hoppus cancer update, MCR makeup line, and tons of releases

Welcome to the Alternative Echo mid-week news report, where we hit you with all the important stuff you missed in the past week while you were out having a life.

Here’s what we’ve learned in the last seven days:

Celebrate Bastille Day with new music– from Bastille

July 14 is Bastille day, which means it’s the day we celebrate all things Bastille– as in, the band Bastille.

In case you didn’t know, it’s actually lead singer Dan Smith’s birthday, which, you guessed it, is how the band got its name.

And instead of us giving Dan a present, he decided to give one to us in the form of a new song. Check out Bastille’s newest release, “Give Me The Future.” (Song available at midnight your time.)

New music videos from Waterparks and POORSTACY

Waterparks released the music video for their song “Fruit Roll Ups” on July 14. The track is a major shift from the rest of Greatest Hits as the album’s only love song. Watch through a rose-tinted camera lens as Awsten Knight sweetly sings to his love interest about gel pens, Capri Sun, and Fruit By The Foot.

Rapper/singer POORSTACY released a video last Friday for “Children Of The Dark.” Fans of rock, punk, and emo rap will want to take note of this up-and-comer. After having gained traction on SoundCloud, POORSTACY (aka Carlito Junior Milfort) released a studio album, a couple EPs, and has even collaborated with Blink-182’s Travis Barker.

Go behind-the-scenes with ONE OK ROCK as they record the acoustic version of “Broken Heart of Gold”

ONE OK ROCK’s “Broken Heart of Gold” was released back in May, however, the Tokyo-based group went back to the studio to record an acoustic version of the track. Take a peak at their music-making process and sympathize with guitarist Toru for having to patiently wait many hours for his bandmates to finish their parts before he could finally record his.

Saving the best for last?

Grab your eyeliner– MCR have partnered up with HipDot for Danger Days inspired makeup line

Remember when My Chemical Romance made that huge comeback announcement and then COVID hit and their comeback sorta just… didn’t happen?

Their tour may have been rescheduled for 2022, but at least we have something else to look forward to: a new makeup line.

The HIPDOTxMCR collab features a pallete, liners, primer, and lip kit all inspired by MCR’s fourth studio album, Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys. The products will be available for presale from July 22-29.

HipDot previously released Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge products in December of 2020.

The Band CAMINO prepare for upcoming tour with Nashville warmup show

Nashville group The Band CAMINO are headed on tour with Dan + Shay this fall, but if you just can’t wait that long (who could blame you??), you can catch them at their hometown warmup show on August 21 at the Ryman Auditorium. Presale starts Friday, July 16, at 10am. You can grab your ticket here by using the code SUNNY.

As an added incentive, concertgoers get to hear their new album a week before it’s released. If you’re within driving distance, you’re gonna want to check this show out.

Mark Hoppus stays positive despite cancer diagnosis

Blink-182’s Mark Hoppus vows he’s going to beat cancer, saying in a livestream Q&A that it’s “only a matter of time.”

The legendary bassist first tweeted about his diagnosis on June 23, 2021. In the livestream, he provided an update by saying he has Diffuse Large B-Cell Lymphoma, stage IV. It’s the same form of cancer his mom had — and beat — back in 2019. Mark will have a CT scan sometime this week to see if the chemotherapy is working, and to get a better idea of what his next steps are.

As always, we’re sending our love his way and hoping for a speedy recovery.
