July playlist

It’s a few days late, but I present to you the Alternative Echo playlist for July.

July, while still just beginning, has proven to be a month of music re-discovery. I confronted my past and came to terms with my love for OneRepublic (watch out for a post on that tomorrow), and I found myself admitting, one again, that I do have a soft spot for old-school Calvin Harris.

That last one might surprise some people, especially considering this is mainly a rock/punk blog, but a few may have caught onto my subtle use of Harris’ “School” in some of the featured playlists. It’s one of my favorite songs of all time and not at all what you’d expect from the guy who produced songs like, “This Is What You Came For” and “Summer.”

Yep, the truth is that I own all of this Scottish man’s albums (excluding the newest release, Funk Wav Bounces Vol. 1). Unfortunately, as he’s gotten more popular, his music has tanked. Too many collaborations. It’s amazing to look at the comments on the “Summer” music video when people realize, “Wait, Calvin Harris can sing??” Yes, he can, and he used to do it all the time.

For those who have scoured this site, you may be aware of a post where I list my favorite albums of all time. I rushed it and ended up with a list that wasn’t complete by any means. I’m working on republishing it. I bring this up because (spoiler alert) Harris’ Ready For The Weekend will be on there.

And, to bring it full circle, I included a song from that album on this month’s playlist, even though it’s – holy cow that was eight years ago. Oh man. I need to end this thing before I fall into another existential crisis.

Bis morgen,

Nicole
